On a balcony facing Ålekistevej a violinist in full evening dress plays a sad and grandiose soundtrack from an American western. Almost like fragile birdsong the violinist strike a poetic note in the middle of everyday traffic.

How would you describe your work?

Jens Axel Beck My private balcony at Ålekistevej will be transformed into a modest stage for a violinist in full evening dress. Each day during the exhibition period, the violinist will play a piece of music that accompanies the activities of everyday life and provides an underlying soundtrack. It thereby strikes a mood that breaks off from the monotonous realities of everyday life, if only for a while.

The music will be like a fragile sound reminiscent of birds’ persistent song. The view from my balcony is dominated by the excessively insistent reality of Ålekistevej. The space under the balcony is filled with sound and activity and the violinist will find a somewhat diverse audience in the daily commuters. The violinist battles with the noise from car traffic but can fill in the pauses with a sound that may reach the individual cyclist or pedestrian and thus offer a more sensitive everyday soundtrack.

The violinist plays a piece of classic film music entitled Ecstacy of Gold composed by Ennio Morricone, which is used in the western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Many will perhaps recognize the sound from the scene that takes place in a cemetery where one of the three main characters, Tuco (the Ugly), is feverishly searching for a grave containing 200.000$.

At Ålekistevej, the music will offer a small romantic break in the daily buzzle for the passer by to be absorbed in and for the habitual to dissolve. Maybe the individual will accept it and let it be the soundtrack of the day. Isn’t it exactly a poetic tone one needs in these prosaic surroundings?

Does that mean that reality at Ålekistevej needs to be challenged by poetry and fiction?

JAB Fiction is based on imagination and can thus be called a space of possibilities. Here, the factual world is less constrictive even though, from time to time, we claim that reality surpasses imagination. Maybe Ålekistevej needs something fantastic but in order to realize something actual we probably need to look at the potentials of the street.

Why did you choose this specific piece of music, known from a western?

JAB I like this music a lot. The original version is amazingly grandiose and provides an intensely solemn mood to decorate Ålekistevej. The piece is an unexpected element in the townscape but will also be met with recognition since it belongs among the most famous pieces of film music. Maybe in that way it can establish a reassuring and inviting atmosphere while retaining a certain ambivalence since it originally accompanies Tuco’s hectic and ecstatic search.
